This Week in the Nursery…

The morning provision have been very keen this week to measure anything they can get their hands on! From cars, to pencils and even drawing around each other and measuring who is the tallest and shortest in the class. During a PE activity, the children engaged well, matching the correct number of children to a hoop, they demonstrated excellent counting and problem solving skills. After showing a lot of interest in using our pretend cameras, we created a large frame for the children to dress up and take photos in! They thoroughly enjoyed this and used our ipad to take photos of each other.

The afternoon provision have been exploring colours this week, The children have been engaging in lots of colour matching activities during PE and Maths. During one of the sessions we went on a ‘colour walk’, the children used a checklist and marked off the different colours they could identify around the school. We were very lucky when the rain stopped (finally!) on Wednesday, a rainbow appeared outside! The children enjoyed looking at the rainbow and identifying the colours. We also had a special visit this week from one of our Nursery parents who is a fireman! the children talked all about fire safety and what to do in an emergency.

Both classes had the opportunity to visit ‘The Travelling Book Fair’ which has been at the school this week. The children chose books to look at then were read one of the stories. They all enjoyed the opportunity to look at lots of  new and different books and are very excited for the upcoming library trip!

This Week in the Nursery…

The morning class have been engaging in all sorts of spooktacular activities this week such as dressing up as witches, werewolves and bats and even made a magical potion! They have also shown a lot of interest in reading the story ‘Bear Snores On’ so they worked as a team to make a cave which they sat in to read the story together. Yoga has also proven to be very popular this week. The children were engaged and followed the instructions well while watching a Moana yoga video.

The afternoon class have been engaging in a lot of ‘messy play’ this week including activities such as mark making in  flour and painting outdoors on a huge sheet of paper! They have also been expressing their ideas for PE lessons, so this week we gave the children the opportunity to choose what they would like to do, the children chose, gymnastics, football and Yoga.

This Week in the Nursery…

The morning class have been helping to create ‘The Nursery Supermarket’ by making price labels and signs for our shop and then engaging in some role play activities in the supermarket! They have been busy spending all their ‘money’ buying lots of different fruits and vegetables. During choosing time the children have enjoyed sharing cars and trains with their friends, taking turns rolling them to each other without any adult support.

On Friday last week, one of the children from the afternoon class said he thought the reason one of our toilets is broken is because a dinosaur sat on it! this led to lots of imaginative role play activities this week. On Monday when we came in, we found a dinosaur hiding in the toilet cubicle, so we locked him in the staff cupboard over night. On Tuesday he had escaped so the children all worked together and followed clues around the school to find Rex.  The children made a long list of what good choices at Nursery are and how Rex could get a ‘good choice mark’. They also enjoyed making dinosaur footprints out of clay and roaring into sound buttons and recording it!

This Week in the Nursery….

Following a lot of interest in Power Rangers and Superheroes, the morning class have been engaging in lots of superhero themed activities such as an exciting PE game of ‘who’s under the cape?’, sorting superheroes by matching them to the correct colour mats and making instruments to make their own theme song on!

The afternoon class have recently expressed a lot of interest in playing with the tea set in the role play area, making lots of snacks and drinks for their friends so we followed on from this by taking the tea set outside for them to have a ‘picnic’ on the grass. We then made our own sandwiches which we ate outside together.

The children have really enjoyed looking at all the different items brought in from everybody’s nature walks. A pumpkin was brought in which the children enjoyed feeling and looking at. One of the children dropped the pumpkin and the seeds fell out which led to a lot of discussion about how it feels and smells. The children then enjoyed planting them in an outdoor mud role play activity.

Thank you to everybody who has brought in their pet this week. The children thoroughly enjoyed meeting Ben the tortoise, Betsy the rabbit and Rosie the cat. The children asked lots of questions and enjoyed having lots of cuddles so thank you for sharing your pets with us 🙂

This Week in the Nursery…

Due to a child being very excited about bringing in a leaflet about a circus, followed by a lot of discussion about clowns and circus acts, the Morning Class have been engaging in all sorts of circus related activities! During PE sessions they have been practising all sorts of circus skills such as balancing on tight ropes, juggling and gymnastics. They also made lots of tickets for their own circus!

They were very intrigued when they arrived one morning to find a tray full of shredded paper and some of our puppets. We read the story ‘Bear Snores On’ which is all about animals who hibernate followed by digging through the shredded paper to find the hibernating animals.

The afternoon class have recently shown a lot of interest in playing with the small world vehicles so we started the week learning about different types of transport. The children were very excited to share how they came to school and engaged well with a listening activity during PE about different types of transport. They also  used duplo to make cars which they raced along a track to see whose was fastest. While learning about different types of transport, the children expressed a lot of interest in emergency vehicles. During registration one afternoon the children took part in a quick quiz about who drives which vehicle. Using junk modelling materials, the children made boats which we tested the following day in our water tray to see if they floated or sank!

Roll Up, Roll Up! The Circus has come to the Nursery!

Following a child bringing a leaflet for the local circus in for ‘Show and Share’ the morning class were over-taken with Circus Fever!

They were very excited to have a surprise visit from Rico the clown this week in response to this shared interest. They experimented with lots of tricks such as plate spinning, spinning hoops and making ribbons float. At one point, the children even disappeared under a cloud!

Some of the children also had the chance to brush ‘monster teeth’ and even helped Rico brush his own teeth!

We would like to offer a BIG thank you to ‘Rico the Clown’ for putting on an exciting performance that kept the Nursery Class enthralled for the duration. This week in the Nursery…

The morning provision have been talking about different means of transport this week. During a PE session the children were very excited to play a parachute game which involved listening for their name to be called and running to the opposite side. They have also been developing their counting and number identification skills by selecting a toy boat with a number on and trying to count the correct amount of people to match the boat. In our outdoor provision, an ‘ocean’ was created in our water tray with lots of different sea creatures and boats, testing the boats to see how many people could fit before the boat sank!

The afternoon provision have shown a great interest in ‘the Gingerbread Man’ this week so after reading the story the children enjoyed drawing the characters and using puppets to re-tell the story to one another. They also had a special treat when we gave the children the opportunity to make gingerbread stars, they helped each other to measure the ingredients and mix the biscuit dough. Building towers has proven to be a popular activity this week, some of the children have been using unifix cubes to make long towers and have been looking at what’s taller, themselves or the tower.

This week in the Nursery…

Welcome to the first Nursery BLOG entry of this academic year!

As you may be aware, we aim to update this BLOG weekly with photos of the activities the Nursery children have participated in throughout the week.

The children in the morning class have been enjoying making collages of their favourite animals, building homes for animals using construction materials such as duplo and meccano and using play dough to create their own animals!

Outside in our garden they have been exploring the digging area and using different shaped balancing beams to develop their physical skills. There have been a few wobblers but lots of determination and perseverance.

The children in the afternoon class have been using paint to make pictures of their houses with brushes and sponges. They also enjoyed making junk modelling houses using glue, scissors, yoghurt pots and cereal boxes.

There has also been lots of ‘den building’ play in the outdoor area with children using sheets, pegs and other large equipment to create tents. The class also decided the playhouse needed to be redecorated which led to a flurry of mud painting of the building!

We really appreciate feedback so if you are happy to ‘leave a reply’ please do so!

Kind Regards
